What are your predictions? Click here and let us know what you think!

Ladies and gents, once again USA faces Mexico in this year’s CONCACAF Copa Oro (Gold Cup). Also once again, I have split loyalties. I’m so bummed that this year we’re hosting (it’s in Pasadena, y’all) and I will be stuck watching it at home rather than in at the Rose Bowl. Demsey, Donovan, and Onyewu will be representing the red, white and blue - three players I really enjoy watching. Chicharito will be playing for Mexico…enough said. The winner of this tourney gets to represent CONCACAF at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil (although 2013 is a long ways away) No matter who wins, both teams are reppin’ the North American zone, and for that, I am proud :) Stay tuned for what’s looking to be a well-played match.

P.S. Chicharito’s slightly offside (but still excellent) goal against Honduras last Wed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqCxl0FtqJg

Mexico.

When it comes to Mexico vs. USA, there is no love lost. The players hate each other. The fans hate each other. Should be a great game. I’m lucky I’ll be there in person. ¡MÉXICO!

This was on a bathroom door in a Pilot Truck Stop here in Laredo, Texas. The first thing I said was:...

the US will need him to play well if they want to win tomorrow…

Andrew,

Attorney General Eric Holder and his anti-gun cronies at theJustice Department are starting to realize they may be in some hot water.

But, as was to be expected, they are going to throw someone else under the bus and hope it all goes away…

After a revealing week of hearings on the horribly corrupt “Project Fast & Furious” – the BATFE’s attempt to create crime in order to make themselves relevant – the head of the ATF, Kenneth Melson, is getting ready to take the fall by resigning.

I guess Eric Holder still refuses to take any responsibility and is placing all the blame on his subordinates.

As you now well know, courageous agents within the ATF have been testifying before Congress that senior leadership at both the ATF and the Justice Department forced gun shops to sell firearms to known smugglers who sold the guns to drug cartels in Mexico.

This disastrous plan resulted in multiple federal agents being shot and killed with weapons that were allowed to “walk” into Mexico.

And this happened even after agents working on the case warned their superiors that it would happen.

The response from ATF/Justice Department leadership?

That a few “eggs” have to be scrambled to make an omelette.

Now, in light of all this controversy, the acting director of the ATF is trying to take the fall by resigning.

But this is where it gets really shady.

Guess who his replacement is supposed to be?

A man I’ve been keeping my eye on for a while – Andrew Traver.

You see, Andrew Traver has been an enemy of gun owners for quite some time.

As head of the Chicago division of the ATF he has advocated nearly every gun ban you can think of.

And even some you haven’t.

To give you an idea, he’s been Obama’s number one choice to head the agency since last year.

The simple fact is…

…he’s worse than the guy he’s replacing.

And what’s more is that, because he’s been the one Eric Holder wanted for quite some time to step in as the director, it is inconceivable that he was not briefed at some point on Project Fast & Furious.

They’ve been talking about Traver taking the helm of the BATFE for at least 6 months (that I know of).

Do you think that a guy being groomed for that position wouldn’t be briefed on the agency’s biggest operation?

I think you know where this is going…

While it is certainly clear that ATF leadership needs cleaning out, to replace the current director with one who is admittedly anti-gun and clearly involved in what his boss is already in trouble over…

Well, that’s unacceptable in my book.

I called my Congressman and told him that replacing one leader who has no respect for my rights with another one doesn’t “fix” the problem.

It’s an attempt to pacify the public.

They know it, but they’re hoping you don’t.

Give them a call and tell them you know what the Justice Department is trying to do and you’re not falling for it.

Call your Congressman at (202) 224- 3121 and tell them that the ATF needs a serious overhauling and that the Attorney General needs to be held responsible for this flagrant abuse of the law.

Make sure they know that your Second Amendment rights are more important than funding some rogue Agency Gone Wild.

I know I’m going to call everyone I know in politics and make sure this doesn’t go unnoticed.

Do the same for me.

Hello there. This blog will provide insights into the nature of politics and political economy (among other things), with a particular focus on Mexico, the U.S. and Canada. I spend a lot of my time working on Mexican politics, oil and gas, and renewable energy issues. The priority for the next twelve months is to study and provide insights into the presidential election in Mexico in July 2012.

This blog will also include random observations about Mexico and North America, politics in general and academic life.

Welcome and I hope my musings turn out to be interesting…

Plane Friendly

A journey to Mexico really begins in the waiting area for your flight.  Mexicans take friendliness to a new level by British standards.  After asking a lady what time she thought we would arrive in Mexico City, a conversation ensued in which, 15 minutes in, she gave me the phone number of her cousin who lives near San Cristobal de Las Casas (now the first point on my trip after Mexico City) and told me to phone him.  Now, am I wrong on this?  If I was flying in the opposite direction and met a Brit who had a cousin living in Oxford and told me to visit him - I would probably think he was a bit nuts.  Am I a cynic?  Unfriendly?  Or just British?

Once on the plane a mexican man pointed to the empty seat between us: “¡Tenemos suerte!” he said (we’re lucky!) and we started talking.  Turns out his daughter who was next to him was half mexican, half-irish, so any words or meanings that were getting lost were translated by her.  By the end of the flight I had an e-mail address and a firm invitation to go rafting in Veracruz (where they are from).  Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had some belters of a conversation with randoms on a train, but I’ve never invited them to come and stay!

Taxi Farely Frightening

It’s probably best to keep your eyes closed and your seatbelt firmly on during a taxi-ride from the airport to wherever your “final destination” is, or at least that’s what I did once the speedometer had reached three-quarters of the way round the dial and the taxi driver was overtaking a car by squeezing through a space between another two on the right.  And this was using the “official” taxi rank at the airport: “Sitio 300”, not some maverick outfit.  At M$152 (£7.90), it’s a tad on the expensive side, especially when compared with the metro (M$3 - 16p) but it’s the safest and most secure way of getting to where you’re staying and when you’ve got a ton of luggage, laptop and other valuables, it’s well worth the money, though the chances of death are probably ten-fold.

New Hostel, New Sensations

The thing I always notice first about a new country is the smell.  Warm countries definitely smell different and as I was speeding past tall neon signs and even taller construction sites, the smell reminded me of Bangkok.  It’s got a strange sweetness to it that’s more pungent than pleasant, but not intolerable until you get the whiff of a drain - which happens a lot more than it does in the UK.  The sensation of it being dark and warm at the same time is always strange for me.  If it’s dark at home, you put your coat on.  You wouldn’t even ever test that.  If it’s dark - it’s cold.  But Mexico is different.  It’s dark and warm.  Your body just doesn’t expect it and heightens as a result.

Entering the hostel, I thought that the journey to México, I suppose, summed up the reasons why people get “shocked” with culture, and very reasons why I’m here and why I love to travel.
